Did you know that 2019 marks CW’s 20th anniversary? In February 1999, nine centers came together and agreed on a shared vision and goals for a network of cooperative development professionals across the US. By December, with bylaws drawn and a governance system in place, CooperationWorks! emerged!
In the last 20 years, CW has expanded to include 34 center members and 15 individual members doing work in all 50 states and across co-op sectors. Together, this network has incorporated over 1000 new businesses, created or saved 15,000 jobs, and developed over 4000 cooperative housing units. And that’s just the work RCDG has helped to fund!
Over the last 20 years, CW has played a crucial role in shaping the cooperative landscape and bringing the word “cooperative” closer to mainstream America.”Employee Owned” is now a buzzword. Talk show hosts casually mention cooperative housing as a means to combat predatory landlords. The New York Times names food co-ops as the mechanism that can save rural America. REI once again thinks it’s cool to make sure their customers know they’re a co-op. A bill supporting worker co-ops can pass with strong bipartisan support in a deeply partisan Congress.
CW and our members are proud of the work we’ve accomplished over the last 20 years. As we head into 2020, we’re is asking you to make sure we can carry the torch for the next 20 years. We’re raising $20,000 dollars to kickstart the next two decades of cooperative development and growing the cooperative movement. Will you help us meet our goal?
